The will to survive is fucking amazing.
A few days back I saw what seemed to be an African woman with a few friends at the store.
They were all dressed in bright beautiful colors, all wearing head scarves. She had hers pulled over one side of her face. What was visible of the rest of her face could have been a Halloween mask. She looked as though her face had been badly burned or flayed. Her lips were pulled away from her teeth, her skin pulled away from her eye, her skin twisted. I could see this from 20 feet away.
Her face easily reminded of death.
And yet the whole of her was beautiful. I was astonished but didn't want to look away. Only did so so as not to stare.
I don't know what she's been through but it was beautiful to see evidence of what intensity she'd been through while she wore pretty colors and hung out with friends and shopped. A normal seeming day. :)
