Fwiw, it turns out this sort of ornamentation is found on old doors and portals in Tunisia. https://encrypted.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&safe=off&nomo=1&prmd=imvnso&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&q=tunisia+door (https://encrypted.google.com/search?num=50&hl=en&safe=off&nomo=1&prmd=imvnso&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&q=tunisia+door)
I didn't see this particular door in the google results, to my surprise - but here it is (and this may be the source photo), prior to that odd photoshopping job: http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-11020370-brown-medieval-house-entrance.php (http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-11020370-brown-medieval-house-entrance.php)
Also, the pictured door is the outside of a door. This insides aren't as fancy. So, even if that was incongruously well-maintained city wall door in an abandoned city in the middle of the desert, it wouldn't look like this.

Extremely pretty, though.
